about

The 2000 debut release from Skincage (Jon Ray) and the first release from Malignant's imprint Malignant Antibody Skincage shares the same dense & evocative sample/loop construction as SGS or Iron Halo Device, yet has a contextual style that brings to mind Coil or later-day Shinjuku Thief. Skincage treats us to a dense pallet of electronics, found sounds, acoustic samples, and electrical glitches. But unlike the typical dark ambient work, the Axon album is brighter, noisier, and covers a remarkable range of compositional styles and textures -- often all within the same track. Both cinematic and emotionally deep, Axon suggests a contemplative storyline of personal pain, pestilence, and isolation, interwoven with a strong sense of internal exploration and discovery. Indeed, Axon is the result of a two year recording process that chronicles a time of artistic awakening and deep personal loss. The pervasive mood of Skincage is perhaps best summarized by the artist's own definition: "the state of being a mind trapped within the confines of a body with unending absolute awareness of those constrictions." If you too have felt the suffocating claustrophobia of your own skin, or if you seek an ever-shifting journey into the tangled nervescape of your mind... then Skincage: Axon is the treatment. Skincage is a serious must-have for any experimental / soundtrack / dark-ambient collection.
